Looking For: A special pal of mine, Patricia Miller - now deceased - was born at the hospital just 9 days before me. Her mother had a rough time of it and was still there with Pat when I was born and our mothers were in the same room. Pat and her parents also showed up at Ft. Totten '37-39 and went down to Panama with us. Finally, we got back together again in 1950-51 when we both graduated from Western High School in Washington, DC. Pat married a Spanish Army Officer and resided in Spain until her early death. I am still in touch with her older brother.
Comments: I was born at the Ft. Totten base hospital Sept. 19, 1933 but at the time my dad was stationed at Ft. Hancock on Sandy Hook, NJ. There was no military hospital at that time at Ft Hancock. The post doctor was prepared to send my mother to Ft. Totten by boat if it appeared there would not be time to get there by car (driving around NY Harbor which my parents did to get there)., , After a tour of duty in Hawaii (living on the seawall at Ft DeRussy next to Waikiki Beach (tough duty) from 1934-37 we returned to Ft. Totten and I attended school in Bayside before we were shipped off to Panama in Nov. 1939. I remember watching quite large trees blowing down by the parade ground during the Hurricane of '38., ,

Comments: I have such wonderful memories of Fort Totten! My father was in the Army, 1st Sgt James L. Lockhart. He helped organize the Halloween parties and Haunted House at the Old Fort every year we lived on the base. We also had other great parties at the Old Fort during the summer. It was awesome! I lived at the pool with my friends every summer and we rode are bikes from one end of the base to the other with no worries.

Comments: I almost drowned in Little Neck Bay and a Fireman pulled me out of the frozen water in winter when somebodies dingy got loose and a few of my friends tried to retrieve it but chickened out and left me in the boat. Eventually I jumped out also and found that you can't breath in freezing water.

Comments: We lived in the big houses off the parade field. I loved when the Post had their festivals. My Mother worked at the YMCA. We used to bag at the commissary. Of course all the kids would play at the old Fort. We lived next door to the Vacanesses (Spelling). My older brother used to spend hours talking to the older sister in the upstairs 3rd floor window. The house was a duplex and those rooms were next to each other. I remember swimming the the pool that was located on the main parade field. What a pretty place Fort Totten was.
