Ft. Totten Security

To The Editor:

I am pleased to report that beginning Monday, June 15, 2009, front gate security at Fort Totten will resume. Light duty FDNY personnel will be assigned to guard the entrance. Effective July 1, 2009, money has been restored to the budget which will allow for the reinstatement of full time gate security.

Community Boards 7 and 11 have received correspondence from FDNY's Roger Montesano confirming the restoration of gate security. A big thank you goes out to the elected officials, civic groups and community leaders who supported efforts of the Bay Terrace Community Alliance (BTCA) to maintain the safety of Fort Totten. We made our voices heard and once again proved that by working together people can make a difference.

Warren Schreiber
President
Bay Terrace Community Alliance, Inc.

Soon after the Federal Government announced its intentions to close Fort Totten, The Queens Tribune ran a story in their annual April Fool's Day issue, announcing that Disney had purchased Fort Totten and was planning a new super theme park called “Fort Disney”.

The community around Fort Totten erupted.  Homes went on the market as people decided to flee Baysde.  Things returned to normal when word spread that it was a hoax.
